Cultural activities are often spread across many different websites, calendars and social networks. Smaller associations, initiatives and independent cultural practitioners in particular often have limited resources to make their activities visible in many places.
kulturbytes brings this information together on a shared platform and also makes it available as structured data for other websites and applications.
What is it about?
kulturbytes originated at OK Lab Flensburg and connects events, cultural venues, organisations and cultural practitioners in a shared database.
People can discover events and cultural venues by category, event type, genre, date and location, or explore them on a map. At the same time, cultural organisations and practitioners gain shared infrastructure that makes their activities visible and available for use on other websites.
The project explicitly welcomes small institutions, associations, initiatives and independent cultural practitioners. kulturbytes aims to be more than another events calendar: it is intended as shared digital infrastructure for a region’s cultural life.
Why does the project exist?
Finding out what is happening culturally in a region often requires knowing many individual sources. Meanwhile, organisers have to maintain the same information in different places.
kulturbytes therefore uses a shared, structured database: information is entered once and can then be used on different websites, regional portals or embedded event calendars.
The aim is to improve the online visibility of cultural activities while reducing the workload for individual organisers.
Open and community-driven
kulturbytes is free to use, open source and oriented towards the common good. The people who use the project should be able to help develop both its technology and its content.
Alongside culture, the platform also includes activities in education, sport, leisure, family life and society. A shared category system helps people find different kinds of activities.
The project originated in Flensburg, but is also intended to be usable by other cities and regions.
Technology and data
kulturbytes consists of several interconnected open-source components:
- kulturbytes-client – the web interface for people looking for cultural activities, where they can discover events and cultural venues.
- uranus-dashboard – the web application for entering and maintaining events, venues and other data.
- uranus – the backend and API. It manages and provides the structured event and venue data.
- pluto – the image server for the media used in kulturbytes.
The components are designed so that the data is not tied to a single website. The API allows the same information to be integrated into other websites and digital services.
